A Swedish relaxing massage is suitable for improving your health and well-being. In this blog you can read what this type of massage entails and what effects it has.
Classic Swedish massage definition
There are many different types of massages. Each type has its own philosophy and methods. One of the most well-known and used massages is the Swedish, or classic massage.
This form of massage is based on the anatomy of the human being. The position and course of the muscles and the direction in which the blood flows are taken into account. The massage techniques are applied with the hands or parts of the hand, such as the fingertips, carpal or fist.
Massage oil is often used to make it easier for the hands to glide over the skin. This gives less friction and makes the movements smoother and more pleasant.
Purpose relaxing massage
The end goal of a relaxing Swedish massage is rest and recovery. The rhythm of the massage movements is therefore also calm. There is a gradual build-up in the techniques used, so that during the massage the muscles are worked more and more deeply in order to achieve the goal. At the end of the massage, you feel relaxed, your muscles are relaxed, and your circulation is stimulated.
Effects of a relaxing massage
The effect of a massage is both physical and mental.
One of the important effects of a relaxing massage treatment is the stimulation of the blood circulation. With pressure and rubbing towards the heart, blood, lymph are brought back into the circulation.
Due to an increase in blood flow in the massaged area, more oxygen and nutrients are supplied and waste products can be removed better. This improves metabolism and aids in recovery.
Other effects of massage on the body are a positive effect on
• muscle function
• blood vessels
• sleep
• depth of breathing
• pain (e.g. in fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis)
• the immune system
Mentally, a relaxing massage improves the general sense of well-being, reduces stress and influences the mood. It could possibly reduce depression and anxiety.
For more information about the influence of touch and skin-to-skin contact, I would like to refer to a blog about this that I wrote earlier: “Touched”.
