Natural Remedies - Charcoal, part 1

Updated: May 20, 2022

Prayer is a powerful intervention in case of illness or health problems. In addition to that, we can use simple and effective means that God has placed in His creation.

“Now in regard to that which we can do for ourselves: There is a point that requires careful, thoughtful consideration. I must become acquainted with myself. I must be a learner always as to how to take care of this building, the body God has given me, that I may preserve it in the very best condition of health."

"“There are many ways of practising the healing art; but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God’s remedies are the simple agencies of nature, that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties."

One of these simple means, without side effects is charcoal. You could name charcoal the black panacea. In my opinion, an indispensable part of the natural remedies that you must have at home. It can be used for many ailments and discomforts. And can provide quick relief from complaints.

What is charcoal

Charcoal is often made from organic coconuts and sometimes from wood. So it is completely natural. The charred, black powder is what you use. If you put the powder under a microscope, you will see small protrusions, passageways and cavities everywhere. About like a sponge.

It also works a bit like a sponge. But a sponge soaks up water in its tissues: it absorbs the water. Charcoal adsorbs substances. It doesn't absorb it, but it does hold it.

Due to the (microscopically small) irregular shape, charcoal powder has a very large surface area and can adsorb many times its own weight in substances.

Usually the package says 'activated charcoal'. This means that the charcoal has been treated, so that it can bind 2-3 times more substances.

How it works

Charcoal can pick up many substances, especially chemicals, toxins and waste. That is why charcoal is excellent for use in detox, inflammation, infections and poisoning, such as food poisoning or an overdose of medicines.

When using charcoal internally, the powder is not absorbed by the stomach or intestines. So it travels through the gastrointestinal tract, where it picks up substances and eventually leaves the body. In this way your body is supported in the removal of waste.

How to apply

In the case of nausea, vomiting, food poisoning and (acute) diarrhea, charcoal quickly improves the situation in many cases. The application is simple.

1. Carefully scoop 1-2 heaped teaspoons of charcoal powder into a tall glass.

2. Add a little water and stir until the powder is well distributed in the water.

Charcoal is difficult to mix, but with gentle stirring it works. Then fill the glass

completely with water.

3. Drink the glass straight away. Fill the glass again with water and drink that empty too.

To limit (temporary) black discoloration of the mouth, you can use a straw.

4. Charcoal starts working immediately after ingestion. Repeat if necessary, depending on the seriousness of the situation. For example after vomiting, going to the toilet (in case of diarrhea) or after a few hours, if the abdominal complaints are still present.

Practical tips

Only allow a sick person to take charcoal if he or she is conscious and can swallow properly.

In case of poisoning, notify a doctor immediately after ingesting charcoal.

Handle the charcoal with care. If you spill the powder, it can be difficult to clean up. Therefore keep the charcoal in a tightly closed container, but also because charcoal binds chemicals from the air.

Charcoal has no taste and is therefore not bad to ingest. But the powder does not dissolve and this feels like very fine sand in your mouth. Young children often do not like this and refuse to drink the charcoal. When my kids are sick and need charcoal, I make a charcoal slurry. I mix 1-2 tablespoons of charcoal powder in 0.5-1 liter of water and let it stand for 10-15 minutes. The powder sinks to the bottom. Then I give the gray water to my child, possibly with a small amount of concentrated juice and a straw.

If you can't get your hands on pure activated charcoal powder, you can buy Norit capsules or tablets at the pharmacy or drugstore. You can open the capsules and use the powder. The capsules contain (unclean) gelatin. I therefore recommend that you do not ingest these sheaths. In addition to active charcoal, the tablets also contain sucrose and lactose, which can be absorbed by the intestines. The pure powder is therefore preferred, but capsules or tablets may be an alternative.

After ingestion of charcoal, the stool will turn black.

Warning

Charcoal adsorbs many types of medication. Therefore, make sure that there is a few hours between the intake of your medicines and the intake of charcoal.
