Exercise is good for you, everyone knows that.
Being in nature is good for you, everyone knows that too.
What happens when you combine these two? Is it twice as good?
What is green exercise?
The combination of exercise in nature is called green exercise.
The definition of green exercise is physical activity or sport in a natural environment, which can provide both physical and mental health benefits. The type of exercise and the environment can be very diverse. From gardening in your own backyard to cycling in the countryside and from mountain biking in the woods to a walk in the park or on the beach.
Green exercise is all about the combination of exercise and nature. Scientific research has compared sports in various locations. There doesn’t appear to be a significant difference between several types of natural environment. But the presence of nature does provide added value. [i]-[ii]
The effects of green exercise
Exercise in general has many health benefits. It positively affects the nervous system, immune system, and many parts of the body, including the heart, muscles, bones, and blood. This can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. And even if you already have a chronic condition, exercise (if necessary, adapted to your specific situation) almost always has a beneficial effect.
The added value of green exercise compared to indoor sports is mainly related to well-being and psychological health. Research shows that people who are active outside in a green environment, even if it is for a brief time, indicate that they are more satisfied with life and experience a better quality of life.
Several studies also show that green exercise:
- Stress lowers,
- Reduces depressive symptoms,
- Anxiety decreases,
- Self-esteem improves and
God's character in nature
“Healthy, active exercise is what you need. This will invigorate the mind.” "There will be increased vitality, which is so necessary to health.” Healthy living, p.132.
This quote about outdoor exercise was written over 150 years ago and is still up to date, as you've read. In fact, it is timeless.
In Psalm 65:4, King David says he's down in the dumps, yet he sings a song of praise to God's goodness. For David knows that with the Creator there is deliverance, forgiveness of sins and blessings. From the mountains, the pastures with livestock, to the crops and corn in the fields, the water and the sun, all nature bears witness to God's goodness. That is reason not to give up, but to shout for joy and sing to God.
“The things of nature are an expression of God's character; by them we may understand His love, His power, and His glory.” Testimonies for the Church 8:263.
