Sweet!

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

"How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!”

Psalms 119:103

Do you also like sweet? A sweet dessert or another delicacy? For many, sweet is something they can enjoy.

The Bible is also positive about sweet. Something good is called sweet. Sweet is nice, pleasant.

Wisdom

"My son, eat thou honey, because it is good;

and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:

So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul:

when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward,

and thy expectation shall not be cut off."

Proverbs 24:13-14

Sweet is good, but it's important to use it wisely. As long as it is used in a natural way, as it was created by God, it's good. Sweet food products mainly consist of sugars, or carbohydrates. In natural unrefined products, such as fruit and (whole grain) grains, in addition to sugars, there are also fibres, vitamins, minerals and many more substances, all of which have their positive effect and support health.

The fibers ensure a regulated absorption of the sugars in the blood, so the glucose level doesn't rise too much.

Manipulated sweetness

"Woe unto them that ... put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"

Isaiah 5:20

Things go wrong when good things are manipulated. It can be deceptive, because it still seems pleasant. The sweet taste is still nice, but the effects created by the manipulation give it a bitter aftertaste.

The same goes for processed carbohydrates. A cereal grain, which is stripped of the bran and germ, loses most of the fiber, vitamins and minerals. The white flour, which is created after this processing, has a completely different effect on the body than whole wheat flour.

Processed, refined carbohydrates cause blood glucose fluctuations. This is because the fibers are missing. As a result, the sugars are quickly absorbed into the blood. This causes a rapid rise in glucose levels, which prompts the pancreas to release a lot of insulin. The insulin helps the glucose into the cells of the body and the glucose level in the blood decreases. But the rapid supply of sugar soon stops. Faster than the body can keep up with. As a result, the glucose level in the blood falls below the normal value. In a graph it looks something like this.

These fluctuations in the glucose level in the blood cause all kinds of symptoms. The most prominent symptom of a low blood glucose level is getting hungry. Many are then inclined to take something sweet with refined, fast sugars again. Then the second peak follows.

Some other consequences of fluctuating blood sugar can include:

  • Insatiable appetite, always thinking about food

  • Changing moods; irritation, nervousness, fatigue

  • Decreased concentration

  • Constantly tense, unable to relax, sleeping problems

  • Headache, dizziness

Discernment

"It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory."

Proverbs 25:27

Not all carbohydrates are bad. Learn to distinguish between good sweet and manipulated sweet. Between plant-based, whole food, food as God created it and refined, processed carbohydrates. Eating a lot of fast sugars is not good. Try to replace these with food in the complete package, with the fiber, vitamins and minerals. For example, instead of cake, you can take a piece of fruit.

Gods vrucht

In Revelation 2 we read about Gods fruit.

"And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." Revelation 22:1-2

In the new Jerusalem the Lord will prepare a feast (Isaiah25:6-8). There we will taste His sweet fruits. How delicious will that taste!

"I sat down under his shadow with great delight,

and his fruit was sweet to my taste."

Song of Solomon 2:3
